What is Erasmus Mundus?

Erasmus Mundus are second cycle university courses, i.e. master’s degrees, provided by international consortia of universities and institutes that provide mobility between the various locations of the partner universities and the achievement of joint, double or multiple degrees. To make it simpler: an Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree programme differs from a traditional one for the following reasons:

  • the degree program is held by several universities united in a consortium;
  • each semester is held at a university location and in a different country;
  • at the end of the course of study, you will receive one or more multiple-value degrees, issued by each of the universities involved in your path.

Who is eligible for Erasmus Mundus?

Students with a qualification that allows access to a master’s degree course can take part in an Erasmus Mundus study course. Pay attention: each Erasmus Mundus path may need specific requirements for the application, and it is, therefore, good to consult all the documents issued by the consortium of universities that hold the degree programme.

How does Erasmus Mundus work?

An Erasmus Mundus degree programme can last from 1 to 2 years. The study activity will be carried out in at least two of the universities that are part of the international consortium, depending on the study programme. At the end of the course, you will get a master’s or PhD degree issued by all the partner institutions of the project.

If you want the most suitable programme for you, check catalogue where you will find all the Erasmus Mundus open opportunities. Within this catalogue, you can filter your research according to your field of study, as well as for specific universities or specific destination countries. As mentioned, all programmes include studying abroad sessions, most of the time at institutes that ensure high-level training recognized worldwide. There are currently more than 180 universities implementing Erasmus Mundus programmes in 54 countries in all continents.

Why should I do an Erasmus Mundus?

Enrolling in an Erasmus Mundus course means experiencing a unique degree or PhD programme. You will have the opportunity to take part in an international class with the best students and researchers. You will be able to spend every semester in a different city, from the great European capitals to the most exotic destinations. You will travel the world during your studies, and you will live in different and distant places, without ever pausing the university.

You will attend courses of the highest quality – recognized worldwide as true academic excellence. You will be able to enhance your foreign languages in different countries, inside and outside the university, and in your daily life. You will build a network of connections with international students and professors from the best universities – essential to build your career in that industry. In conclusion, you have no reason to try and take advantage of this unique and rare opportunity.

Which are the requirements for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship?

To take part in an Erasmus Mundus project, you can apply for a scholarship that allows you to partially or completely cover the costs expected by the programme. The amount of the scholarship varies depending on the programme and year.Generally, an Erasmus Mundus scholarship offers the following advantages:

  • Visa: covers the bureaucratic costs of obtaining a visa (when necessary);
  • Transport: contributes to transport and travel expenses for international travel;
  • University fees: covers university fees, which allows you to attend classes but also to take advantage of services such as classrooms, laboratories, or libraries;
  • Healthcare: covers the costs of any private health insurance;
  • Monthly allowance: a fee that allows the student to cover the costs of accommodation and daily life.

Eligibility requirements vary for each program, therefore the first thing to do is to check the description of the programme, to which you are applying, and understand what are the necessary documents. Most of the programmes require the following documents:

  • C.V. : your curriculum vitae (Europass, when specified);
  • cover letter: where you will specify the reasons that push you to want to participate in the programme;
  • copy of the bachelor’s degree: to certify that you have the minimum requirements to access the degree or PhD programme;
  • a reference letter: a letter to be drawn up by a reference person (e.g. a teacher, mentor, etc.) certifying your personal skills, competencies, qualities, and good academic performance;
  • an English language certification: an official certification of your English level (IELTS or TOEFL) with a precise minimum level is often required.
